“Every message I got was short, clear and kind. I knew what to expect before I walked in.”
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Clear answers before you write.
01Do I need a diagnosis to start?
No. Some clients have a diagnosis, some are waiting for an evaluation and some are exploring on their own. We do not diagnose, but we can talk about what to look for in an evaluation.
02Do you take my insurance?
We bill Medicare Part B and many PPO plans directly, and the practice keeps its list of plans in the insurance details. We do not bill Medicaid. If your plan is not on the list, it may still reimburse part of a visit as out-of-network care, and your plan decides.
03What is a superbill and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt that you can send to your plan to ask for reimbursement. It lists a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. Whether your plan pays is its decision, and we cannot promise that it will.
04What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what care will cost before you start. We give you a written estimate before your first visit. It is an estimate and not a contract, and you can dispute a bill that comes in $400 or more above it.
05How much does it cost and how do fees work?
Your fee is given to you in writing before your first visit, and you can pay by card or by health savings or flexible spending card. A limited number of reduced-fee places may be open, so ask. The fees page explains each step.
06What happens in the first session?
You and your clinician talk about what you want from therapy and how you would like sessions to run. There is no test. Before you leave, you decide together whether it feels like a fit.
07How often and how long are sessions?
A session is usually 50 minutes. Most clients meet weekly or every other week. Your clinician sets the pace with you and you can change it.
08Are you licensed where I live?
Our clinicians are licensed in Washington. Video and phone visits are for clients who are in Washington at the time of the visit. If you live elsewhere, we are glad to help you look for a clinician licensed there.
09What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Tarn is not monitored around the clock, and we reply to messages within one business day.
10What is private and what are the limits?
We keep your records private and share them only as the law allows. The main limits are a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, and abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. Your clinician explains this at the start.
11Can you see my teen, and how does consent work?
Yes. A parent or guardian takes part in the first conversation, and the clinician explains how consent and privacy work under Washington rules, including what the teen shares and what parents hear.
12What is your cancellation policy?
Please give 24 hours’ notice to cancel or move a visit, by email or text. If something comes up at the last minute, write to us and we will talk about it.
